Saquon Barkley: NY Giants star running back to miss several weeks with high ankle sprain
EAST RUTHERFORD - Saquon Barkley promised after Sunday's 32-31 thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Bucs in Tampa that he would return this season.
Just when that will be remains to be seen, although it's clear the ankle injury that knocked him out of the eventual Daniel Jones-led triumph in his first career start could have been far worse.
Barkley is undergoing further testing on what has been diagnosed as a high ankle sprain, a source informed of the situation told NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY Network Northeast on Monday.
The Giants should know more later when the evaluation is complete, and while the team will likely list Barkley's status as week-to-week, it is believed he will be out a minimum of four to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the sprain and how he takes to treatment. The Giants have a bye in Week 11 following their game against the Jets, and considering the value of the player, expect the team to use caution with Barkley in his rehabilitation.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur has his regular day-after-game conference call with the media set for 1:20 p.m. Monday.
"For those who know me, know how I operate, know how I am, would I say I am really hurt? No. Could it be way worse? Yes. I'm not out for the season," Barkley said after the game Sunday night following a riveting performance from Jones, the rookie who completed 23-of-36 passes for 336 yards, two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs, including the eventual game-winner from 7 yards out with 1:16 remaining.
"I'm going to try, hopefully, whatever I can to get back as quickly as possible. Not just for myself but for the team," Barkley added. "That's the only thing I can have to think about. Even caught myself getting a little upset on the sidelines because I wasn't able to be out there for those guys. That's the only thing I'm focused on. Just trying to do whatever I can, take that same approach that I have, trying to compete at a high level in the weight room, on the football field, with this rehab, to get back with my team, just try to continue to build off of this [victory]."
Rookie kicker Matt Gay of Tampa Bay missed a 34-yard field goal that would have won the game as time expired.
Barkley was injured in the second quarter when his right ankle was caught under a defender after he caught a short pass from Jones. He left the game and, while X-rays were negative, he returned to the sideline using crutches with his right foot in a protective walking boot.More on this developing story as details become available.
