Officials mark groundbreaking for Belmont arena project
Gov. Andrew Cuomo was joined by a gaggle of elected officials, developers, executives of the New York Islanders and dozens of other dignitaries Monday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the $1.3 billion arena/hotel/retail redevelopment at Belmont Park.
The project will bring a 19,000-seat arena, hotel and 350,000-square-foot retail center to about 43 acres of the state-owned racetrack property.
In his remarks, Cuomo said the project builds on two traditions, the Islanders and Belmont Park, the home to horseracing's Belmont Stakes. He added that the Islanders would play 28 games at the Nassau Coliseum next season, seven more than originally planned.
"The Islanders belong on Long Island - and today we start building the state-of-the-art home this team and their fans deserve while generating thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity for the region's economy," Cuomo said. "With seven more Islanders games at the Coliseum this season, fans will have even more opportunities to see their favorite team and generate momentum for the move to their new home in two years."
Construction of the arena, hotel and retail village is expected to create 10,000 jobs and generate $2.7 billion in economic activity, according to a statement from the Governor's office. By 2024, the project is expected to sustain 3,200 new full-time jobs, produce $858 million in annual economic activity and generate tens of millions of dollars in new annual tax revenue.
Despite delays in getting started, officials insist that the arena will be ready for the start of the 2021-2022 National Hockey League season.
New York Arena Partners, the developers building the project, is comprised of the Oak View Group, Sterling Equities, whose principals include the Wilpon family, and Scott Malkin Group. Malkin is also a partner in the majority ownership of the Islanders.
Empire State Development orchestrated the request for proposals for the Belmont redevelopment and served as lead agency for the project's required environmental review. The agency was named as the main defendant in two lawsuits filed this month by the Village of Floral Park and a group of Elmont civic associations seeking to stop the project.
